FireOS Versions: From Android 5.1 to Android 16

Understanding the split between Android-based Fire OS and Linux-based Vega OS

Two Systems, Two Philosophies

Until late 2025, every Fire TV ran Fire OS, a customized Android fork (AOSP) that supports standard Android apps and APK sideloading. With the introduction of Vega OS (built on Linux, starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select), the ecosystem split. While Vega OS offers a closed app model similar to Apple TV, Amazon continues to release and update Fire OS hardware.

Feature Fire OS (Android-based) Vega OS (Linux-based)
Built on Android (AOSP fork) Linux, developed in-house by Amazon
Apps Android apps (Java / Kotlin) React Native (JavaScript)
Sideloading Supported on current devices Not available to regular users
Control More open, closer to Android More closed, closer to Apple TV

How to Read Fire OS Versions

Fire OS uses a custom version numbering structure mapped directly to underlying Android releases and API levels.

Fire OS Based on Android API Level Example Devices
Fire OS 16 Android 15 and 16 35 and 36 Newest generation
Fire OS 14 Android 12, 12L, 13 and 14 31 to 34 Hisense U7 (2026)
Fire OS 8 Android 10 and 11 29 and 30 Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen (2023)
Fire OS 7 Android 9 28 Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen (2022)
Fire OS 6 Android 7.1 25 Fire TV Stick 4K 1st Gen (2018)
Fire OS 5 Android 5.1 22 Fire TV Stick Basic Edition (2017)

What about Fire OS 14?

Amazon recently introduced Fire OS 14 (which jumps directly to Android 14 / API Level 34 base), but it is only targeted at select third-party Smart TVs (like certain 2025/2026 TV models from Hisense, TCL, or Onida).

  • No Fire TV Stick runs Fire OS 14.
  • The latest generation of Fire TV Sticks (such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen and Fire TV Stick 4K 2nd Gen) run Fire OS 8 (which is based on Android 11 / API 30).

Do Fire OS 9, 10, 11, 12, or 13 exist?

No, Amazon skipped numbers 9 through 13 completely.
Amazon aligned the major version number of Fire OS directly with the underlying Android OS version:

  • Fire OS 6: Based on Android 7.1 (Nougat)
  • Fire OS 7: Based on Android 9 (Pie)
  • Fire OS 8: Based on Android 11
  • Fire OS 14: Based on Android 14

Because Amazon jumped straight from Android 11 to Android 14 in their development cycle, they skipped version numbers 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 so that the Fire OS main version matches the Android API level generation.
