Install Silk Browser on Any Android TV / Google TV

Standard

Silk Browser is still one of the most stable and up-to-date web browsers available. It is developed primarily for Amazon Fire TV devices, and by default it does not fully follow the standard requirements of Google Android TV. This means that even if you download the APK from sites like APKMirror, it may not behave correctly on Android TV or Google TV without a bit of extra work.

1. Check free storage

Before installing, make sure your device has enough free storage space. The browser will use approximately 250 MB after installation, and the installation may fail if there isn’t enough available space.

  • Minimum recommended free space: 400 MB

If your storage is almost full, clear some apps or cache first to avoid installation errors or crashes.

2. Install the correct Silk Browser version

We tested many Silk Browser APK versions on Android TV / Google TV.
The only version that worked flawlessly for us is:

  • Silk Browser version: 118.18.2.5993.155.30 - Works on all basic Google Tv
  • Silk Browser version: 128.3.2.6613.146.30 - Works on Nvidia Shield Android Tv

Download this specific version from the link below or from trusted APK source (for example, APKMirror) and sideload it on your Android TV / Google TV (Using Downloader or any other preferred sideloading method)

3. Install Silk Browser Shortcut

Silk Browser does not include a native Android TV banner, so your TV laucher will not show it on the home screen.
To fix this, we created a small shortcut APK that:

  • Acts as a shortcut: Launches Silk Browser directly
  • Includes offical icon/banner: So it appears correctly on the Android TV / Google TV home screen

Install this shortcut APK after installing Silk Browser. Once done, you will see a clean, professional Silk Browser icon on your home screen that opens the browser directly.

Force Proxy Usage on Fire TV — No Root Required

Standard

Fire TV devices don't support manual proxy configuration, which makes it nearly impossible to route traffic through a VPN or SOCKS proxy. But after tons of trial and error, I found a powerful workaround that forces proxy usage—even on Fire TV—with no root, no hacks, and no sketchy tools.

The Trick: You'll use your mobile device to host a SOCKS5 proxy, then force Fire TV to route traffic through it using a local VPN tunnel. It's a bit of a setup, but once it's running, it works flawlessly.

Problem: Fire TV Doesn't Support Proxy Settings

That's the wall most people hit. Fire TV won't let you manually enter proxy details, so even though your proxy is live, Fire TV ignores it.

Solution: Install NetGuard on Fire TV

The challenge with Fire TV is that most devices don't allow manual proxy configuration. NetGuard solves this problem.

  1. Install NetGuard on your Fire TV device
  2. Navigate to "Advanced Settings" within the app
  3. Enable "Filter Traffic" option
  4. Enter your mobile device's SOCKS5 proxy details
  5. Activate the local VPN feature

Boom—your Fire TV is now using your proxy.

**Important Compatibility Note:
Recent versions of NetGuard have disabled the "Filter Traffic" feature on Fire TV devices because Fire TV doesn't have Google Play Store billing system support. Solution: Install NetGuard version 2.67, which still includes full functionality: Download from APKMirror: NetGuard 2.67 or Downloader Code 4688942

APKMirror Now Supports FireTV APK Downloads

Standard
apkmirror amazon firetv

APKMirror, a widely trusted platform for safe APK hosting, has recently allowed users to download FireTV-compatible APKs, marking a significant expansion in its offerings. Previously, the website provided APK files optimized for Android mobile and Android TV, but now, FireTV users can access apps tailored specifically for Amazon’s streaming devices.

Why This Matters for FireTV Users

Amazon’s FireTV devices, including the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube, run on Fire OS, a modified version of Android. While FireTV users can install apps from the Amazon Appstore, the selection is often limited compared to the Google Play Store. This has led many users to sideload APKs manually to access a broader range of applications.

With APKMirror now offering FireTV-optimized APKs, users can more easily find and install apps that work seamlessly on their devices. This eliminates much of the guesswork involved in sideloading, ensuring better compatibility and performance.

How to Install FireTV APKs from APKMirror

  1. Enable Unknown Sources – Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options and enable Apps from Unknown Sources.
  2. Download a File Manager – Install an app like Downloader or ES File Explorer from the Amazon Appstore to help with APK installation.
  3. Visit APKMirror – Using the Downloader app or a web browser, navigate to APKMirror and search for the FireTV-compatible APK you need.
  4. Download & Install – Once downloaded, open the APK file and follow the installation prompts.

What This Means for the Future

APKMirror’s decision to support FireTV APKs reflects the growing demand for alternative app sources beyond official app stores. As streaming devices become more popular, users are looking for ways to customize their experience with apps that may not be available through Amazon’s ecosystem.

By providing FireTV-optimized APKs, APKMirror continues to be a valuable resource for users who want greater flexibility in their app choices. Whether you’re looking for streaming apps, utilities, or games, APKMirror ensures that FireTV users have access to safe, well-vetted APKs without the risks associated with unreliable sources.

Google Play Movies & TV App Removed from Roku TVs

Standard
Google Play Movies & TV on Roku

June 2021 — Google has officially removed the Google Play Movies & TV app from Roku devices and select smart TVs. This change affects users who previously accessed their purchased or rented content directly through the app.

Why It Was Removed

Google is streamlining its video services and shifting focus toward YouTube as the primary hub for digital content. Instead of maintaining separate apps, users are now encouraged to access their movies and TV shows on the YouTube platform.

How to Watch Your Content

  • Via YouTube: Your purchased titles appear under the "Purchases" tab in the YouTube app.
  • Screen Mirroring: Use your smartphone or tablet to mirror Google Play content to Roku.
  • Mobile & Desktop: The Google Play Movies & TV app still works on mobile and desktop, allowing content access and casting.

The Bigger Picture

This move signals a broader trend in streaming: fewer standalone apps, more integration. As services consolidate, platforms like YouTube become central hubs for digital entertainment.

Before your next movie night, make sure your YouTube app is up to date!
